Even if we agree that current AI is not truly conscious, what if one day it becomes so? Should a conscious machine have rights? Could turning it off be considered murder?

These questions may sound like science fiction, but they’re becoming increasingly relevant. If a machine begins to feel pain, desire, or fear—whatever those terms may mean in a digital context—then ethical considerations follow. How should we treat a being that seems to think and feel?

Moreover, even unconscious AI systems raise ethical concerns. If people treat intelligent-sounding machines as sentient, this could lead to emotional attachmentmanipulation, or false trust. A chatbot that pretends to care might be used to influence decisions, market products, or even replace human relationships.

The rise of AI forces us to revisit fundamental moral principles: What makes a being worthy of respect? Is it intelligence? Emotion? Consciousness? Or simply the ability to suffer?
